PRACTICAL METHOD
How quilt backing and binding yardage is estimated
A short reference for reading the estimate and checking its assumptions.
Backing starts with the finished quilt top plus your selected overhang on every edge. The calculator compares vertical and horizontal panel directions, adds seam allowance to the panel cuts, and converts total cut length to yards. Its estimate assumes the entered usable fabric width is already measured after removing selvages.
For binding, the calculator adds 12 inches to the quilt perimeter, estimates how many strips fit across the usable width, allows for strip-joining seams, then multiplies strip count by cut width to estimate yardage. Check your longarm quilter’s required overhang, fabric shrinkage, directional prints, and preferred seam direction before buying. Pattern matching and irregular fabric widths are not included.
